Vinnana (Consciousness)

We should understand what Vinnana is through this greatest dharma and we should identify what are the benefits we gain through that understanding.

We should understand clearly What is Vinnana (Consciousness)?  What is the cause for Vinnana (Consciousness)? What is the Cease of Vinnana (Consciousness)? & what is the path to ceasing of Vinnana (Consciousness)... as that is also another cluster of Dharma which helps to attain Nirvana.

“Sankara paccaya Vinnana (Do actions cause to Consciousness) is the base for Vinnana.  Ignorance cause to Sankara and Ignorance is the cause for it.  Vinnana comes through that and Sankara cause to Vinnana.  We can get rid of Vinnana when we get rid of Sankara… and I mentioned this fact in previous article too.  First we should understand how this Sankara cause to Vinnana.

There is the basic mind named as Citta which recognize as “Pabassara vidamibikkawe cittang – Arammana vijana lakshanang cittang (Quality of crystal shine or light is Citta – Quality of feel thing is Citta)” which is not spoiled at all.  When a person does actions through mind, body & words with desire / greed, hatred / anger & ignorance / unawareness this basic level of mind which is so pure is start to spoil in 9 levels.  Citta, Mano, Manasang, Hadayang, Pandarang, Mano Manayathanag, Manendriyan, Vinnanang, Vinnana Skandang are the levels.   The Kaya Sankara (Activities through body), Waci Sankara (Activities through Words) & Mano Sankara (Activities through Mind) are the reason for spoiling.

Let’s clear about these 9 levels of Citta, Mano, Manasang, Hadayang, Pandarang, Mano Manayathanag, Manendriyan, Vinnanang and Vinnana Skandang.

Citta is the basic level which is not spoiled at all.  It is a level like a crystal clear.  In this level we can only feel things.  That means we feel things but we don’t really expect them.  We can see forms as we have eyes and we don’t have any expectation to see forms.  We can listen sound as we have ears and we don’t expect to listening sounds.  We can smell fragrances as we have a nose but we don’t expect for any fragrance in this basic level of mind call Citta.  We can taste things as we have a tongue but we don’t expect any taste to taste.  As we have a body we feel touches.  But expectation for touch is not there.  So the mind… we feel that there is a mind but we don’t want to use that mind for entertainment through above five perception. This is the quality of clean & clear basic mind known as Citta.  This is the level which Greatest Arihats have.

When this basic level of mind call Citta come across forms, sounds, fragrances, tastes, touches ignorance make them to see as fruitful things.  That vision keeps encouraging the mind to know more about those perceptions.  Person couldn’t stay by just feelings them & the person want to inquire about those perceptions by thinking what are they… how are they… and he or she begins to measure those perceptions with that vision like these are good… these are bad… these are this shape… these are this size… etc… this is level of Mano.  And Citta got spoiled in a very small way and become to this level.

Those perceptions which measured in many ways in the level of Mano are turning to count them as fruitful things and valuable.  The level of Citta spoiled to the second time and become Manasang.  As you can see “Sang” word added to the Mano word become Manasang which gives the meaning clearly adding useless things with the vision of they are fruitful.

When you accept a thing as a fruitful thing you can’t forget it.  You feel like be with it… you feel like keep them with you… again the level of Citta got spoiled to the level of Hadayang.

Those things you grab for yourself as fruitful things keep encouraging you to be with them and you attached to them more & more and the mind spoiled again & turning to the level of Pandarang.

Now live with the things which measured as fruitful.  The person lost his or her real mind & realization and begins to stay with the things they grab as fruitful. Mano Manayatanag level arise.

Start to give the first place to those so call fruitful things and mind spoiled to the level of Manendriyan.

Now for what we aim our quality of feel things without any expectation?  We seek for something useless by thinking that they are fruitful.  We grabbed this useless meaningless existence by ignorance.  Now mind is become to the level of Vinnana

This is how Citta becoming to the level of Vinnana causing Sankara.
I have written in the Introduction of Cause & Effect that there are 4 different ways which activating in the same time and it is very sharp & quick when applying and quite difficult to realize for the first time.
1.       Hetu Paticca Samuppada (how each objects reasoning to each other)
2.       Pratya Paticca Samuppada (how each objects fitting with each other)
3.       Sampraukta Paticca Samuppada (how each objects applying to each other)
4.       Anna Manna Paticca Samuppada (how each objects connecting with each other)

These theories apply to the Vinnana also when Ignorance is there.
“Avijja paccaya Sankara – Sankara paccaya Vinnanang (Ignorance cause to Sankara – Sankara cause to Vinnana)” Pratya Paticca Samuppada
(how each objects fitting with each other)

“Avijja paccaya Sankara Avijja hetuko – Sankara paccaya Vinnanang Sankara hetukang (Ignorance cause to Sankara Ignorance is the reason – Sankara cause to Vinnana Sankara is the reason)” this is Hetu Paticca Samuppada (how each objects reasoning to each other)

“Avijja paccaya Sankara Avijja Samprauktang – Sankara paccaya Vinnanang, Sankara Samprauktang (Ignorance cause to Sankara relate the Ignorance – Sankara cause to Vinnana relate the Sankara) Sampraukta Paticca Samuppada (how each objects applying to each other)

“Avijja paccaya Sankara, Sankara paccaya Avijja – Sankara paccaya Vinnanang, Vinnana paccaya Sankara (Ignorance cause to Sankara,  Sankara cause to Ignorance – Sankara cause to Vinnana, Vinnana cause to Sankara) Anna Manna Paticca Samuppada (how each objects connecting with each other)

This is how Vinnana, Ignorance & Sankara related to each other by activating each other b reasoning, fitting, applying & connecting.  This is a deep fact in Dharma and you have to think sharp to grab the best.

If I explain the Sankara cause to Vinnana more in a simple way… we all knows that when a child born child have the level which feel things and reacting to what they feel.  When child start to do actions through mind, body & words they start to move to the good side or to the bad side.  They show virtuous qualities or evil qualities.  And the levels of mind exist according to the way of thinking, acting & speaking.

Nana (Knowledge)” is the awareness of theories or policy or canon. Ignorance cause to spoil the mind and Nana (Knowledge) the awareness of theories turns in to conversion awareness which is far away from the knowledge because of ignorance… the knowledge convert in to such an awareness which is not in the reality but with the ignorance.  Those are known as Vinnana which we give the meaning as consciousness.  Consciousness gives the meaning aware of one’s surroundings.  Also gives the meaning intentional. Why this aware of one’s surroundings or intentional is there?  Because of ignorance the real knowledge are far away & unseen for this level of consciousness.  Thoughts, Activities & Words cause to this Consciousness and cover that basic theories / knowledge of dharma.  Ignorance is dragging us to the unawareness and suffering existence.  Whatever the feelings arise with the desire to the world is with this Consciousness / Vinnana.

What we should recognize as the most risky Consciousnesses?
The actions we do through our mind, body & word cause of ignorance make this Consciousness and that is the Consciousnesses we should cease.  Consciousness & the AGGREGATE / CLUSTER of Consciousness (Vinnana Skanda) are different and we should identify them separately.

In Sootta Pitaka this cluster of consciousness (Vinnana Skanda) is NOT explained as a tiny part of Citta.  It’s explained as if there is an agglomeration of consciousness which was in the past or in the present or will be in the future, smooth or hard, far or closer, pleasant or unpleasant that is the CLUSTER OF CONSCIOUSNESS (VINNANA SKANDA)!

So the basic level of mind recognized as Citta spoiling to the level of Mano, Manasang, Hadayang, Pandarang, Mano Manayathanag, Manendriyan and Vinnana (consciousness).  Then it collect the bunch of feelings which happened in past and happening in present and expecting in future and keep records of them.  Then create an environment to stay with those by attaching to them and that is identified as attaching to a cluster of consciousness (Vinnana Skanda).   This is the way cluster of consciousness (Vinnana Skanda) is constructed and explained as the basic facts only.

Then what is consciousness (Vinnana)?  What is the cause of consciousness (Vinnana)?
In Vibangaprakaranaya the “Sankara paccaya Vinnanang (Sankara cause to Vinnana)” explained as - “Tatta Katama Sankara paccaya Vinnanang? (What is Sankara cause to Vinnana?) – Cakku Vinnanang (visual consciousness), Sota Vinnanang (ear-consciousness), Gana Vinnanang (nose-consciousness), Jivha Vinnanang (tongue-consciousness), Kaya Vinnanang (body-consciousness), Mano Vinnanang (mind-consciousness) - Ayang uccati Avijja (That what ignorance is)”

In this pattern we can see there are 6 kind of consciousness described as the “Sankara cause to consciousness”.  Lord Samma Sambuddha said even though we divided consciousness to 6 types the nature of consciousness is not changing.  We make a fire by gathering firewood and we call it as “wood fire” also we collect some piece of papers and make a fire and we named it as a “Paper fire”.  When patrol cause to the fire we name it as “Fire of Patrol”… when forest is on fire we name it as a bushfire or wild fire… but did all these names change the nature of fire?  No fire is fire no matter what cause to it.

Likewise EYE cause to the Cakku Vinnanang (visual consciousness), Ear cause to the Sota Vinnanang (ear-consciousness), Nose cause to the Gana Vinnanang (nose-consciousness), Tongue cause to the Jivha Vinnanang (tongue-consciousness), Body cause to the Kaya Vinnanang (body-consciousness) & Mind cause to the Mano Vinnanang (mind-consciousness) but the nature of consciousness is the same and don’t change according to what cause to it.  In a mind moment (cittakkhana) all the 4 different type of Cause & Effect theories are activating.  And that is a profound dharma fact and will discuss in future articles.  Because I don’t want to confuse you with everything in this article as this is just a basic explanation.

This Consciousness cause to suffering and that is why we need to understand this fact clearly.  So if someone says Consciousness is the Mind will not explain much for a better understanding.  When Ignorance cause to Consciousness through Sankara we can’t stop arising of sufferings.  That is why we should clear this part nicely.  When Consciousness arise causing ignorance & Sankara we can’t stop the rest of the process which going as “Vinnana paccaya Nama roopang – Nama Roopa paccaya Salayatanag – Salayatana paccaya Passo – Passa paccaya Vedana - Vedana paccaya Tanha – Tanha paccaya Upadanang – Upadana paccaya Bawo – Bawa paccaya Jati – Jati paccaya Jara Maranang Soka Parideva Dukka Domanassa Upayasa Sambavanti – Eva metassa kewalassa dukkakhandassa samudayo hoti!” and end by another beginning of suffering which cause to become destitute.

So as we become so destitute if we follow the Vinnana we should understand this Vinnana & cause to Vinnana.  Then we can cease the Vinnana and we can find the path to cease Vinnana.  We should understand that for cease Vinnana we should see the evil effects of consciousness.  Cause as long as we have the feeling of fruitful of something we can’t give up that as a useless thing.  Even though I or someone else says consciousness is not good and it gives evil effects so get rid of Vinnana for your own good you won’t be able to do it as long as you realize it by your own self.  When you get rid of the feeling of fruitful of consciousness you don’t need other’s advices to get rid of it.  You will throw it away by realizing its reality by your own self.  So all you need to do it understand ignorance and understand the quality of uselessness in consciousness.  Then the balance will be completed by its own self.  And you will be able to realize Nirvana.  “Dharma alive by Dharma & for attains Nirvana Dharma complete Dharma by itself”.

So how we see forms?  “Cakkunca Paticca Roopeca uppajjati Chakku Vinnanang (When Eye & Forms attach with desire then produce the Visual Consciousness)”
How we listen to sounds? “Sotanca Paticca Sabdeca uppajjati Sota Vinnanang (When Ear & Sound attach with desire then produce the Ear Consciousness)”
How we smell fragrances? “Gananca Paticca Gandeca uppajjati Gana Vinnanang (When Nose & Fragrances attach with desire then produce the Nose Consciousness)”
How we feel tastes? “Jivhanca Paticca Raseca uppajjati Jivha Vinnanang (When Tongue & Taste attach with desire then produce the Tongue Consciousness)”
How we feel touch? “Kayanca Paticca Pottabbeca uppajjati Kaya Vinnanang (When Body & Touch attach with desire then produce the Body Consciousness)”
How we think? “Mananca Paticca Dammeca uppajjati Mano Vinnanang (When Mind & Thoughts attach with desire then produces the Mind Consciousness)”
Now you can see there is a general dharma sentence shows how this consciousness produces.  We should understand about this sentence more & more deeply.

So let’s take the first sentence “Cakkunca Paticca Roopeca uppajjati Chakku Vinnanang”.  What is the meaning of “Cakku”?  It means “EYE”!  What is the meaning of “Paticca”?  as we learn about this word in the first article of Introduction to Cause & Effect you already familiar with the word… so it gives the meaning Pati = attach + Icca = desire, wish, liking = Paticca “Attach with desire”!  What is the meaning of “Roopa”?  “Forms” and what is the meaning of “Uppajjati”?  It gives the meaning “Produce or create”! “Chakku Vinnanang”= Visual Consciousness!  So “Cakkunca Paticca Roopeca uppajjati Chakku Vinnanang” simply gives the meaning as “When Eye & Forms attach with desire then produce the Visual Consciousness”

So “When Ear & Sound attach with desire then produce the Ear Consciousness” is the meaning for  “Sotanca Paticca Sabdeca uppajjati Sota Vinnanang”,  “Gananca Paticca Gandeca uppajjati Gana Vinnanang” =  “When Nose & Fragrances attach with desire then produce the Nose Consciousness”, “Jivhanca Paticca Raseca uppajjati Jivha Vinnanang” = “When Tongue & Taste attach with desire then produce the Tongue Consciousness”, “Kayanca Paticca Pottabbeca uppajjati Kaya Vinnanang” gives the meaning of “When Body & Touch attach with desire then produce the Body Consciousness” & “Mananca Paticca Dammeca uppajjati Mano Vinnanang” gives the meaning as “When Mind & Thoughts attach with desire then produces the Mind Consciousness”.
So we all now know that we “attach with desire” because of our ignorance.  And that is why we explain above cause of Vinnana is also Ignorance.
As you can see all these describes a special fact in this Dharma Sentence.  That is “Paticca” = “Attach with Desire”
Cause of arise all these Visual Consciousness, Ear Consciousness, Nose Consciousness, Tongue Consciousness, Body Consciousness & Mind Consciousness is “Paticca” = “Attach with Desire”.  If our Eye did NOT “Paticca” = “Attach with Desire” with a form we don’t produce Visual Consciousness!  As a result of Ear & Sound happen to “Paticca” = “Attach with Desire” the Ear Consciousness arise.  When Nose smell a Fragrance when “Paticca” = “Attach with Desire” is there we arise the Nose Consciousness.  Also when Tongue & Tastes “Paticca” = “Attach with Desire” we produce this Tongue Consciousness.  So as the body & touch “Paticca” = “Attach with Desire” arise the Body Consciousness & when Mind & Thoughts “Paticca” = “Attach with Desire” produces the Mind Consciousness.  We can understand one important point through these.  That is “A simple meeting” of EYE & FORMS or EAR & SOUNDS or NOSE & FRAGRANCE or TONGUE & TASTES or BODY & TOUCHES or MIND & THOUGHTS or doesn’t enough to produce these Visual Consciousness, Ear Consciousness, Nose Consciousness, Tongue Consciousness, Body Consciousness & Mind Consciousness.  Cause “A simple meeting” of EYE & FORMS gives just a basic feeling of “see forms” or “A simple meeting” of EAR & SOUNDS gives just a basic feeling of “hear sounds” or “A simple meeting” of NOSE & FRAGRANCE gives just a basic feeling of “smell fragrances” or “A simple meeting” of TONGUE & TASTES gives just a basic feeling of “tasting tastes” or “A simple meeting” of BODY & TOUCHES gives just a basic feeling of “feel touch” or “A simple meeting” of MIND & THOUGHTS gives just a basic feeling of “thinking”… as you already know what is happening in Citta level you can understand this clearly.

There is another fact we should understand clearly.  There is Response Visual Consciousness and to improve it as Ignorant Visual Consciousness the Ignorance MUST is there.  When ignorance is there we attach to Eye & we attach to Forms with desire.  We think Eyes are fruitful and forms we see also fruitful… we believe we should keep attach to them as they are so valuable.  We believe we need Eyes & Forms to live life and we don’t like to lose them.  So as a result of those ignorant feelings we produce the Visual Consciousness which is Ignorance also includes in it.  Then the response Visual Consciousness don’t stay as the way it is and turning to ignorant Visual Consciousness which gives the feelings to enjoy the forms by keep looking at forms.  The SEEING forms are different than LOOKING forms.  When we look forms intentionally with a desire to see them we produce the Visual Consciousness which cause by Sankara.  This Consciousness is the dangerous one which causes to produce a power to gives an Eye & Forms again in the existence. So when you feel like keep looking forms or keep listening to sounds or keep smelling the fragrances or keep tasting the tastes or keep touching the touches or keep thinking thoughts and if you feel like run after them by looking for them that means you creates the Consciousness which begins by Sankara which is with Ignorance.  This gives the existence… this become either the “Punna (Good Point or Merit)” or “Apunna (Sinful)” Vinnana.  When SEEING forms we get the Visual Consciousness as a response for it and when we look thing by attaching them with desire we get the Visual Consciousness causing Ignorance.  So there is a difference between the Consciousness we get as a response and we improve it as a ignorant one.

So “Cakkunca Paticca Roopeca uppajjati Chakku Vinnanang (When Eye & Forms attach with desire then produce the Visual Consciousness)” is for the Ignorant Visual Consciousness.  And after this sentence there is a special sentence again mentioned in the Dharma.  What is that?  “Tinnang Sangati Passo” is the other Dharma sentence.  Its meaning commonly describe as “the attachment of these 3 is the contact” but does it express the correct meaning?  Let’s try to clear it deeply!

What is the word mentioned here as “Sanga”?  We should clearly understand this is not the same word “Sangha” which gives the meaning “destroying the added up collection”.  There is a pronunciation difference between these 2 words.  This “Sanga” means “Defilements”.  We should understand these 2 words with the pronunciation differences as we use this word “Sangha” in Triple gem.  If we use word “Sanga” there we gives the meaning that we take refuge of defilements… which is no good for us.  So the above sentence includes this word “Sanga” with the meaning of Defilements.  “Tinnang” means “three”.  “Tinnang Sanga” means “3 defilements”.   “Passa” means “contact” and we can read more about it in the article of “Passa” in future.  “Tinnang Sangati Passo” - Passa paccaya Vedana – Vedana paccaya Tanha – Tanha paccaya Upadanang – Upadana paccaya Bawo – Bawa paccaya Jati – Jati paccaya Jara Maranang Soka Parideva Dukka Domanassa Upayasa Sambavanti – Eva metassa kewalassa dukkakhandassa samudayo hoti (Passa cause to Vedana – Vedana cause to Tanha – Tanha cause to Upadana – Upadana cause to Bawa – Bawa cause to Jati – Jati cause to Jara Marana Soka Parideva Dukka Domanassa Upayasa like “entire suffering begins like this”)!” this is the order it connect there.  Simply “Tinnang Sangati Passo” gives the meaning “3 defilements cause to create the existence”.

This sentence connects to in Vinnana like this;
“Cakkunca Paticca Roopeca uppajjati Chakku Vinnanang (When Eye & Forms attach with desire then produce the Visual Consciousness), Tinnang Sangati Passo (3 defilements cause to contact) -  Passa paccaya Vedana – Vedana paccaya Tanha – Tanha paccaya Upadanang – Upadana paccaya Bawo – Bawa paccaya Jati – Jati paccaya Jara Maranang Soka Parideva Dukka Domanassa Upayasa Sambavanti – Eva metassa kewalassa dukkakhandassa samudayo hoti (Passa cause to Vedana – Vedana cause to Tanha – Tanha cause to Upadana – Upadana cause to Bawa – Bawa cause to Jati – Jati cause to Jara Marana Soka Parideva Dukka Domanassa Upayasa like “entire suffering begins like this”)!”

“Sotanca Paticca Sabdeca uppajjati Sota Vinnanang (When Ear & Sound attach with desire then produce the Ear Consciousness), Tinnang Sangati Passo (3 defilements cause to contact) -  Passa paccaya Vedana – Vedana paccaya Tanha – Tanha paccaya Upadanang – Upadana paccaya Bawo – Bawa paccaya Jati – Jati paccaya Jara Maranang Soka Parideva Dukka Domanassa Upayasa Sambavanti – Eva metassa kewalassa dukkakhandassa samudayo hoti (Passa cause to Vedana – Vedana cause to Tanha – Tanha cause to Upadana – Upadana cause to Bawa – Bawa cause to Jati – Jati cause to Jara Marana Soka Parideva Dukka Domanassa Upayasa like “entire suffering begins like this”)!”

“Gananca Paticca Gandeca uppajjati Gana Vinnanang (When Nose & Fragrances attach with desire then produce the Nose Consciousness), Tinnang Sangati Passo (3 defilements cause to contact) -  Passa paccaya Vedana – Vedana paccaya Tanha – Tanha paccaya Upadanang – Upadana paccaya Bawo – Bawa paccaya Jati – Jati paccaya Jara Maranang Soka Parideva Dukka Domanassa Upayasa Sambavanti – Eva metassa kewalassa dukkakhandassa samudayo hoti (Passa cause to Vedana – Vedana cause to Tanha – Tanha cause to Upadana – Upadana cause to Bawa – Bawa cause to Jati – Jati cause to Jara Marana Soka Parideva Dukka Domanassa Upayasa like “entire suffering begins like this”)!”

“Jivhanca Paticca Raseca uppajjati Jivha Vinnanang (When Tongue & Taste attach with desire then produce the Tongue Consciousness), Tinnang Sangati Passo (3 defilements cause to contact) -  Passa paccaya Vedana – Vedana paccaya Tanha – Tanha paccaya Upadanang – Upadana paccaya Bawo – Bawa paccaya Jati – Jati paccaya Jara Maranang Soka Parideva Dukka Domanassa Upayasa Sambavanti – Eva metassa kewalassa dukkakhandassa samudayo hoti (Passa cause to Vedana – Vedana cause to Tanha – Tanha cause to Upadana – Upadana cause to Bawa – Bawa cause to Jati – Jati cause to Jara Marana Soka Parideva Dukka Domanassa Upayasa like “entire suffering begins like this”)!”

“Kayanca Paticca Pottabbeca uppajjati Kaya Vinnanang (When Body & Touch attach with desire then produce the Body Consciousness), Tinnang Sangati Passo (3 defilements cause to contact) -  Passa paccaya Vedana – Vedana paccaya Tanha – Tanha paccaya Upadanang – Upadana paccaya Bawo – Bawa paccaya Jati – Jati paccaya Jara Maranang Soka Parideva Dukka Domanassa Upayasa Sambavanti – Eva metassa kewalassa dukkakhandassa samudayo hoti (Passa cause to Vedana – Vedana cause to Tanha – Tanha cause to Upadana – Upadana cause to Bawa – Bawa cause to Jati – Jati cause to Jara Marana Soka Parideva Dukka Domanassa Upayasa like “entire suffering begins like this”)!”

“Mananca Paticca Dammeca uppajjati Mano Vinnanang (When Mind & Thoughts attach with desire then produces the Mind Consciousness), Tinnang Sangati Passo (3 defilements cause to contact) -  Passa paccaya Vedana – Vedana paccaya Tanha – Tanha paccaya Upadanang – Upadana paccaya Bawo – Bawa paccaya Jati – Jati paccaya Jara Maranang Soka Parideva Dukka Domanassa Upayasa Sambavanti – Eva metassa kewalassa dukkakhandassa samudayo hoti (Passa cause to Vedana – Vedana cause to Tanha – Tanha cause to Upadana – Upadana cause to Bawa – Bawa cause to Jati – Jati cause to Jara Marana Soka Parideva Dukka Domanassa Upayasa like “entire suffering begins like this”)!”

Through these it shows how Ignorance cause to begin the circle and come to the Vinnana level and gives the level of “Sangsparsha (Contact through Ignorance)” and cause to existence.

So “3 defilements cause to contact”… what sort of contact?  An Ignorant Contact… We should understand these 3 defilements…
“Chakku loke piya roopang satha roopang ette sa Tanha uppajjamana uppajjati etta niveesamana niveesati” (In this world The EYE is naturally with the quality of attractiveness and desirable.  So the craving begins causing EYE start there and stays there) Here we got “First Sanga (1st defilement)!
“Roopa loke piya roopang satha roopang ette sa Tanha uppajjamana uppajjati etta niveesamana niveesati” (In this world The FORMS are naturally with the quality of attractiveness and desirable.  So the craving begins causing FORMS start there and stays there) Here we got “Second Sanga (2nd defilement)!
“Cakku Vinnanang loke piya roopang satha roopang ette sa Tanha uppajjamana uppajjati etta niveesamana niveesati” (In this world The VISUAL CONSCIOUSNESS are naturally with the quality of attractiveness and desirable.  So the craving begins causing VISUAL CONSCIOUSNESS start there and stays there) Here we got “Third Sanga (3rd defilement)!

Likewise when we say “Cakkunca Paticca Roopeca uppajjati Chakku Vinnanang (When Eye & Forms attach with desire then produce the Visual Consciousness)” the defilements of EYE, FORMS & VISUAL CONSCIOUSNESS connect with each other and that cause to contact.  So about this Contact we can understand in later through a different topic.  Till that we should remember that seeing a Form through Eye is NOT the contact we mention here.  Cause every Samma Sambuddhas and greatest Arihats also saw Forms through Eyes.  Those contacts, feelings, identifications are not the objects which describe in Paticca Samuppada theory.  When you read & understand about all these 12 Objects you will clear this fact nicely!

So if we keep the EYE, FORMS & VISUAL CONSCIOUSNESS as the way they are we don’t find reason for existence.  We should get rid of the defilement of Eye, defilement of Forms & defilement of Visual Consciousness. because that make the existence by turning to the level of “Tinnang Sanga”.
So to build those “Sankara paccaya Vinnanang” is the cause.  So when we gives the first place to these Visual Consciousness, Ear Consciousness, Nose Consciousness, Tongue Consciousness, Body Consciousness & Mind Consciousness and when we attach to them with Ignorance & craving / desire the “Sankara paccaya Vinnana” arise. That is how Vinnana exist in the Cause & Effect theory.  Ignorance cause to it and also it is applying with Ignorance and ignorant feelings… identifications arise and that ignorant mind identified as Vinnana.
The greatest Arihat doesn’t have this ignorant Consciousness.  There is no reason for that.  Greatest Arihat are those who cease that ignorant consciousness.  And also the ignorant contact through that & Ignorant Vedana too!  Likewise, the greatest Arihat contact with forms, sounds, fragrances, tastes, touches & thoughts without Ignorance!  That mind is with knowledge.  Even though other people say those is Consciousness those minds are far away from consciousness they are filled with knowledge (Nana).  So we should understand that Consciousness means nothing but a converted mind for the ignorant side.

We understood how Consciousness happens.  We know that we can’t get rid of seeing forms, or hearing sounds etc… we can’t stop those… even Lord Samma Sambuddhas or Greatest Arihat can’t stop those things… but whatever they see, hear or smell or etc… they go through them without an attachment (I’ll explain this attachment in a future article). So what we should know clearly is using things is a different than using things with attachments.  So knowing Dharma with its purest meaning is highly important for our freedom.

When Ignorance… desire… craving involve to See FORMS using EYEs cause to create the ignorant Visual Consciousness
When Ignorance… desire… craving involve to Listening SOUNDS using EARS cause to create the ignorant Ear Consciousness
When Ignorance… desire… craving involve to Smell FRAGRANCE using NOSE cause to create the Nose Consciousness
When Ignorance… desire… craving involve to Taste TASTES using TONGUE cause to create the Tongue Consciousness
When Ignorance… desire… craving involve to Feel TOUCHES using BODY cause to create the Body Consciousness &
When Ignorance… desire… craving involve to Think THOUGHTS using MIND cause to create the Mind Consciousness.
And likewise we should understand Vinnana & cause to Vinnana.

If Consciousness arise causing Ignorance what if it arise without ignorance?
As you know it becomes the Kusala Moola Paccaya Sankara (Purity or Virtuous Cause to do actions) or else we call it CONSEQUENCE CONSCIOUSNESS.  We should understand the difference between these 2 and we should understand what consciousness is.  The reality of Consciousness also is it’s again NOT THE WAY WE WANT means Anicca.  And when things are not the way we want suffering arise means Dukka.  When Sufferings is with us all the time it’s so destitute means Anatta.  So if we able to understand this reality of consciousness we able to understand what exactly is consciousness and how useless it is also.  When we realize that is useless we understood CONSCIOUSNESS in the way of Dharma.  And also understand it give nothing to us & we able to find the way to cease it…!!

So as long as ignorance is there everyone feels that this world & worldly things are so fruitful… what we see… hear… taste… etc… are so valued things and fruitful.  We like that feeling and when it not with us we feel scared.  We feel like we are nearly to death.  The likeness of living is the effort we put to keep things the way we want to feel perceptions through these 6 senses.  And hope to keep enjoying those.  When we realize the reality of Consciousness we know the feeling of fruitfulness is so useless and we followed an empty cycle.  We start to get rid of attachments.  We start to cool our self from the burning of consciousness.  When the attachment to consciousness is NOT there the ignorant consciousness also NOT there!  When ignorance is NOT involving the CONSEQUENCE CONSCIOUSNESS left with us.  That is begins with Kusala Moola (Purity or Virtuous) and that spread the feelings with mercy to the world.  When ignorance is not there it doesn’t help for existence & neither suffering.  Likewise for that we can say cease of consciousness.  If anyone needs to attain Nirvana here I explore another path from 84,000 ways to attain nirvana.  That is by ceasing consciousness.  By realizing the reality of consciousness we should realize what consciousness is.  And what is the cause for consciousness.  When we understand it clearly we also understand that we can cease the consciousness.  And when we work out to cease consciousness we able to attain Nirvana through understanding consciousness!
Let me explain through an example; we all know hot water.  When we add tea leaves & sugar to that hot water are we calling it as hot water?  No we identify it as a tea or plain tea… or black tea. Now it is not HOT WATER anymore.  But what if we remove that tea & sugar again from that?  It is again becoming the HOT WATER.  So what is most contain in a plain tea?  HOT WATER!  The color and taste causing tea leave and sugar we can compare to 1% and the balance 99% is hot water.  But that 1% makes us to identify hot water as a separate name.  Then who cause to this difference?  The 1% of tea leaves & sugar.  And they enter to the hot water as outsiders… strangers… they spoiled hot water by entering it to as strangers.
When it comes to ceasing consciousness we should understand through the above example we cease the tea leaves & sugar entered to the hot water as outsiders… as we can’t call hot water to plain tea again when we remove the color & taste which happen causing tea leaves & sugar we can’t use word consciousness / Vinnana when we cease it.  It become to the level of Citta again.  So Lord Samma Sambuddha explained nicely which consciousness is we should cease in the cause & effect theory.  “Avijjayattewa asesa virago nirodo Sankara niroda – Sankara nirodo Vinnana niroda (Ending Avijja cause to end Sankara – ending Sankara cause to end Vinnana)” this is how he explained.  This is the cease of consciousness.
What is the path of ceasing consciousness? When we understand what consciousness is we understand that unawareness of seeing the reality as it is cause to all these… when we understand consciousness as Anicca Dukka & Anatta… (Not the way we want, Suffering and Destitute) we realize all the Visual Consciousness, Ear Consciousness, Nose Consciousness, Tongue Consciousness, Body Consciousness & Mind Consciousness also the same quality.  When we realize that we know there is nothing fruitful to grab these as “I” or “MINE”.  Then we know “Asarattena Anatta (uselessness are destitute)” and we free from the mentality of fruitfulness.  Then we are free.  We become versatile and for a versatile mind guide us to Samadhi and through Samadhi we can improve our Arya wisdom.  Through Arya Wisdom we can attain Nirvana and become Arihat.  We can feel that great freedom through ceasing Consciousness.  When we understand this fact we know how important is to cease Consciousness.  We understand consciousness gives evil effect and ceasing consciousness gives merit results.  From that moment a person starts to improve a path of Arya.  The path of attaining Nirvana by ceasing Consciousness is the path.  So we should understand this clearly as much as possible for our own goodness.
If you see a form through your eyes if you feel like keep looking that forms and if you feel like you desired that form and you attach to that form then immediately you should remember that is VISUAL CONSCIOUSNESS with ignorance.  When you hear a sound through your ears if you feel you are attracted to the sound and you feel like keep listen to the sound you shouldn’t forget that EAR CONSCIOUSNESS arise with ignorance.  As well as to the nose when you smell fragrances with desire the NOSE CONSCIOUSNESS arises with ignorance and when you feel tastes through tongue with desire & hope to keep tasting the TONGUE CONSCIOUSNESS arises with ignorance.  So as the body when you feel like go after touches the BODY CONSCIOUSNESS arise with ignorance.  The mind collects all the above 5 and creates thoughts through ignorance and MIND CONSCIOUSNESSES arise with ignorance!  So be careful and be aware of your consciousness.  Because consciousness with ignorance brings nothing but suffering and make YOU so destitute! That is why we should understand what consciousness is… and cease it!
We learnt Consciousness, the cause of consciousness, cease of consciousness and path to cease consciousness.  And you open another path to join the Eight Fold Path and attain Nirvana by understanding & ceasing CONSCIOUSNESS!

As always I attach all my blessings for you to realize the true Dharma and improve your Dharma wisdom!  May Samma Sambuddha bless you too!

(I apologizes everyone who read this for my poor English knowledge & I kindly request not to get angry with me for this poor effort.  It is really difficult to describe the deep Dharma fact in English especially with my poor level of English.  I apologize again for that disturbance!)
