“Namo Tassa Bagawatho Arahatho Samma Sambuddassa”

“Namo Tassa Bagawatho Arahatho Samma Sambuddassa”
The next main phrase we use for worship!
We all know one common meaning to this phrase as “I bow to the Glorious, Holy & fully Enlightened Buddha” it is good in a way. Because if someone feel even a tiny true respect or a faith about Buddha is a reason for him or her to become a lucky one and gather more purity for his life circle. BUT there are always 2 meaning for the Dharma. One is worldly, will guide you to a better life but with defilements and have reasons to continue this life circle. The other one is extramundane (not worldly) and will guide you to the Nirvana! But nowadays the meaning of Dharma which guides you to the Nirvana is covered by the worldly meaning and as a result of its many of us can’t understand the real dharma which guides us to the Nirvana!

Any way let’s see the real meaning of “Namo Tassa Bagawatho Arahatho Samma Sambuddassa”!

According to the “Brahmau Sootta” this phrase of “Namo Tassa Bagawatho Arahatho Samma Sambuddassa” is available in Vedas (sacred scriptures of Hinduism).

The story of Brahmau is described like this;
Brahmau was a higher ranked Brahma whom well knowledgeable in all the three Vedas. And also he was a famous teacher. When lord Buddha happen to this world he got to know about the Buddha through rumors. How he already knew about the Buddha. Because that fact is written in Vedas for long time back. In Vedas everything well explained about the Buddha’s personality. How he should look like… what are the 32 recognize characteristics in Buddha’s personality… how he behave…etc… so he said to his students “we shouldn’t criticize the Buddha without study him and you all should go and study him first whether he has all these characteristics in his personality”. So, how these facts available in Vedas? In the period of Kassapa Buddha these facts added to the Veda and they were there for long period without the depth meaning of those.

So the students checked all those described characteristics and they said he has 30 characteristics and the reason for it is the other 2 are invisible. It was written in Sootta that the later Buddha has shown those invisible characteristics to Brahmau for prove that he is the Buddha. Likewise the Brahma Brahmau got to know that he is the greatest Buddha mentioned in Veda literatures. Without seeing the Buddha and without hearing any dharma from him the Brahma Brahmau was turned to the direction which Buddha was and said “Namo Tassa Bagawatho Arahatho Samma Sambuddassa” 3 times with a higher respect.

So it is impossible fact to being an “Arya” person (A person who follows the greatest eight fold noble path) without hearing the greatest Dharma of Buddha. If so he should be an ordinary every – day – man call ignorant person. So the Brahma Brahmau was an ignorant person while he bows to the greatest Buddha by saying “Namo Tassa Bagawatho Arahatho Samma Sambuddassa” and there was no way to know him the real meaning which guide to the Nirvana by that time as he didn’t meet the Buddha when he say that phrase. It was written in doctrine that later he met Buddha and become a Sowan person after hearing the Dharma. If an ignorant person see some qualities of Buddha and respect him that is only through what he or she has seen in outer side. That respect only base on the faith and not by seeing the real qualities.

So now it is time for us to think! When we say “I bow to the Glorious, Holy & fully Enlightened Buddha” with which thought we said it? Is it only the respect as he is our greatest teacher? Or guessing his qualities or with the faith? Do you think through that phrase we can attain Nirvana? Do you think that pleasant thought comes for Buddha will guide us to Nirvana? Then it means we said that phrase without any deep meaning… it also show that we still guessing our Buddha have those qualities and not so sure about it… so do you think it is good for a Real Buddhist?
I guess you will answer me “No or Never”!

So let’s see the meaning we should know for Nirvana!
Before our great Buddha passed away he has given an advice to other Bhikku’s. That advice was based on one Bhikku call Dharmarama. The Buddha said if someone bow to me please take Bhikku Dharmarama as an example. Treating me well or giving the four requisites for me or worship me is not the exact bow for me. It is just a tiny good work. If someone bow to me through his or her practice or attitude by following the eight fold path which I have taught for you all is the real bow to me and that is exactly what Bhikku Dharmarama follows. This is well described the 2 meaning of “Namo Tassa Bagawatho Arahatho Samma Sambuddassa” and one is “Bow to the person” and the other one is “Practicing the path and make it their life routine”

So if YOU took the decision of that “I SHOULD FOLLOW THE PATH WITHOUT ANY DELAY AND I SHOULD ATTAIN NIRVANA SOON AS POSSIBLE” this deep meaning of “Namo Tassa Bagawatho Arahatho Samma Sambuddassa” is for YOU!

We think this world is a better place and we create “I, MINE & MY SOUL” in this world. Once we listen to a real Dharma from a true Kalyana Mitta (the person who truly shows the path to end suffering of yours as a true friend) we realize the three features of life which are “Aniccha, Dukka, Anatta” (impermanency, suffering and being destitute). Once we realize those three features we know that there is nothing suitable to take as “I” or nothing suitable to gather as “Mine”. We make a decision according to the Dharma that we should save ourselves from this unchangeable truth and we make the decision to follow the great eight fold path to attain Nirvana!

Through true Dharma we realize that we should bow… “Namo” and “Tassa” we have realize a place to bow through true Dharma….
Then what is that path? Where should we bow?

There are people, animals, materials & stuffs in this world. And we take them strongly as existing objects and we try to make them “I”, “Mine” & “My soul”. We run behind them to achieve them… we never stop running behind them and this view of existence has become our soul. Because of that we have closed our minds for the truth and it is like we are running behind a hallucination.
To see the TRUTH first we should see the illusion. Once we realize the illusion we have seen the truth.

So the Buddha taught us a way to see the illusion. And a way to open our minds for the truth… he taught us a path to divide all these existing objects. He taught us to divide a human into 32 substances. Hair, nails, teeth, skin, flesh, nerves, bones, liver, lungs, heart etc… he asks us to see those parts individually… he showed us when we divide a human body into substances there is no 33 substance to see… we gather all these 32 substances and make it one as the thirty third part and make that structure as “I” or “my mother… my father… my sister… my relation… my friend… or a Human” He showed that the 33rd part is the illusion we see. He showed many ways to divide things and see the illusion. And that dharma topic is well discussed in the page “Buddha’s teaching for Nirvana”.

If I described this illusion more that it is like a whirl fire ball. When a fire ball whirling we can see a big circle of fire and the fire ball doesn’t exists in that time. If we take that fire circle as the reality we have cheated by that illusion. But as we know that there is a fire ball which makes this illusion we never get cheat. As the human body has complicated 32 substances we can’t see this illusion at once. This system even applicable to a tree… when we divide a tree into leaf, branches, fruits, flowers etc… we don’t say a tree for those individual substances. We take them as one object and make the illusion call tree… likewise this system is applicable for everything in this world.

So Buddha taught us to understand this reality through our own wisdom. He told us to see the truth by ourselves through the path he showed. And this truth is neither by any kind of self – hypnosis nor by any temporary ecstatic state induced by concentration on some illusion. There is no cheating in this dharma.
So that way he taught us a way to divide objects of this world and see the reality. To that system of divide objects means the “Bagawatha” (Baga = divide, Watha = system). So now we know that we should divide the objects to see the truth.

So now where should we bow? We should bow to that system which shows us the truth!
Now we happen to know a secret which was unknown for many years… all these time we were behind a secret… we couldn’t realize the truth because of that secret… we were fascinated to that secret illusion… but once we realize the truth that secret is not exist anymore… no secret anymore… “Araha”

All these time, we fascinated to the world by thinking it is real and better place to take as “I or Mine”. So, we collected objects. We collected humans through relationships… we collected materials… we collected animals… we collected properties… the word “Sang” gives the meaning of “bring together or the congregate or collect or join” when we took the word “Sankara” means “we collect things or join with things and DO things” and the word “Sansara (life circle)” means “by taking things as well-to-do or comfortable we collect or things or we join with them” then the word “Ma” gave the meaning of “get rid of or throw away ” now we got a meaning for the word “Samma” it means “all those what we collected all these time or we gathered as mine we throw away or we get rid of that behavior”

Become a “Samma” is a Wisdom! It is like a Salvation to oneself from the collective behavior and to become such a person we bow to the system of divide objects. So once we successful with this method we become “Sambuddassa”. “Sang + Bu + Uddassa”. We already know the meaning of “Sang” and “Bu” means the “existence” and the “Uddassa” means “uproot or abandon” so we now have the meaning for “Sambuddassa” which is “uproot or abandon the existence by get riding of the behavior of collect objects”

Then “Namo Tassa Bagawatho Arahatho Samma Sambuddassa” means "The path which we should follow… the path we should practice… the eight fold path which we should make our routine and practice without any delay and the wisdom we should obey"

Then isn’t this phrase of “Namo Tassa Bagawatho Arahatho Samma Sambuddassa” reminding a person the PATH to follow at the beginning? Isn’t this expressing a real meaning to someone who follows this greatest eight fold path? Isn’t this gives a meaning for a great beginning to enter the path? Isn’t this meaning guide us to abandon the existence and attain Nirvana?

So now YOU can give a great beginning to your path!
Through the true dharma you enter to a great Arya path and YOU remind that in the beginning through this phrase, every time you worship or whenever you like! “Buddha” means “the one who uproot or abandon the existence” and become an “Arihat” means YOU become a Buddha in a way. (Details mentioned under the Dharma topics in page “Buddha’s teaching for Nirvana”)
So now you realize the “real bow to the Buddha” which Lord Buddha explained to his student Bhikkus before he pass away.
If someone follows the great eight fold path and if he or she doesn’t use this phrase with this meaning that doesn’t become a barrier to his or her great practices. By reciting this phrase only will not give any good if you are not truly following the eight fold path to attain Nirvana! We should follow the path by practices.
Now please don’t think that as you are not following the eight fold path I will never say this phrase again… because to save yourself you should select this path. I wish YOU all the best as you are NOW going to realize the truth and enter to this path & end this endless suffering through NIRVANA quickly as possible!
There is another meaning to the word “Namaskaraya” which is the shorten form of this phrase “Namo Tassa Bagawatho Arahatho Samma Sambuddassa”!

Bow our head is one meaning and clearing our name is another meaning {“Namaskaraya” (Nama = Name, Askara = Clear)} As we all know we use a Name to identify objects including “I”… we use names from the day we started thinking that this existence is good… when we realize the truth and when we enter to the path we realize that this Name is no use of us… we realize there is nothing to continue with a Name… all these objects are illusions and there is nothing suitable to identify by giving Names. Then that realization we enter to the path which clears all these names through Nirvana! With that short meaning we give a short name to this phrase of “Namo Tassa Bagawatho Arahatho Samma Sambuddassa” as “Namaskaraya”!
When we start our path with this thought & meaning our mind adjust for a specified direction which we gain a great assist by Dharma.
May you understand the true meanings of each dharma fact and guide yourself to the path of Nirvana!
